The tsuba comprising: an oval iron plate pierced and carved with a decoration of plum branch, cherry blossoms, and three-level pine tree (sangai matsu), the surface with delicate line carving on face and reverse, the rim with many running iron bones, slight rust spots, signed Akasaka Tadanori saku--8.3cm. h., 7.9cm. w., 5.5mm. th.; a petal-form iron plate pierced as chrysanthemum blossom and leaf with surface line carving, signed Tadatoki saku--7.5cm. h., 7.2cm. w., 5.5mm. th.; a round iron plate pierced with overlapping pine needles, the rim with some running iron bones, slight rust spots, signed Bushu ju Akasaka Tadatoki--7.6cm. h., 7.4cm. w., 5mm. th; a round iron plate, Daigoro style, pierced with design of fence and iris blossoms--7.3cm., 7.2cm., 5.25mm. th.; a round iron plate, Daigoro style, pierced with cart wheel and pine over water--7.6cm. h., 7.4cm. w., 4.5mm. th.; an oval iron plate pierced with crescent moon, clouds, stars, birds, and sea shore, the rim with iron bones and rust patches--7.4cm. h, 7cm. w., 4mm. th.

Lot Essay

The first tsuba listed above is the work of Akasaka Tadanori I, who worked circa 1775. He was a student of Akasaka Tadashige (1730-1816).
