MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1560), SIGNED HOSHU TAKADA (NO) JU TAIRA MORITSUNE, ATTRIBUTED TO MORITSUNE II

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and boar's neck point (ikubi-kissaki); length (nagasa): 1 shaku, 4 sun (44.5cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0 cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): extremely strong wood and burl grains (itame mokume), especially on the inside; highlighted with ji-nie.
Tempering pattern (hamon): irregular rolling patern (notare) in vigorous nie and with strong 'swept sands' (sunagashi) extending about 11cm. from the hamachi.
Point (boshi): brushed (hakikake)
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): wide, slightly tapering, ubu and with a dry, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kuri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): Hoshu Takada (no) ju Taira Moritsune.
