The octagonal stiles with octagonal cushion form finials joined by four shaped horizontal pieces for the back, the apron below the seat of cut-out form and joined to the legs with characteristic pegs, Rohlfs insignia R and 1902 (88.08.01)--46 3/4in. (118.7cm.) high

Lot Essay

Another example of this model dated 1901 with a label affixed to the bottom 'The Property of Darwin Martin' is known to exist in a private collection.. It is not surprising that Darwin D. Martin would have patronized Rohlfs as well as Frank Lloyd Wright, as Rohlfs was already recognized internationally at the turn of the century. By 1900 Rohlfs had been published in Europe and was in preperation to participate in the Turin 1902 Exhibition in Italy.
