Mathurin Moreau (French, 1822-1912) was from a distinguished line of sculptors. His early training was in his father's workshop and his son and grandson would each receive their training in the same manner. Moreau received a first class medal in the Salon of 1859 and became a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1885. His many public commissions include work at l'Opéra, les Tuileries, le palais du Trocadéro, le Hôtel de Ville and le Palais de Justice.
