Of shaped oblong form with scalloped border, each end chased with panels of foliate scrolls on a matted ground enclosing, at the top, the American eagle with a UNION banner, with figures of Liberty and Justice on the sides, and below, with a Union shield and military trophies, apparently unmarked--2½in. long

The chasing on this buckle is very similar to that on an example with California retailer's mark sold in these Rooms, January 22, 1993, lot 141.
