Lot Essay

The backs of these chairs appear to be inspired by plate 5 of Hepplewhite's, Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide (Dover, 1969). The elegant line inlaid downswept front legs are a more unusual variant to strapant or marlboro legs also sea on chairs with this splat pattern. For chairs with the same splat and front legs see Sack, American Art from Isreal Sack vol. 4, Brochure 25, p. 1102, P3912.
