In 1958 Kane sent out word that he wished to take a photograph of America's jazz musicians for a special edition of Esquire magazine commemorating the golden age of jazz. The turnout was greater than anticipated since the photograph was taken earlier than most musicians usually woke up. Included in this photograph are: Art Blakey, Johnny Griffen, Dickie Wells, Buck Clayton, Charles Mingus, Gene Krupa, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Maxine Sullivan, Coleman Hawkins, Tholonius Monk, Roy Elridge, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie and others.
