A Prophet. LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL "L" CUT FROM A LECTIONARY(?) ON VELLUM. [Northern Italy, c. 1480].
130 x 125 mm. (5 1/4 x 4 7/8 in.), cut approximately square, burnished gold ground surrounding the initial composed of a vertical column of gray acanthus foliage enclosing an orange pumpkin and a green cornucopia, the latter sprouting a horizontal cornucopia in orange. Within on a solid blue Ground, the gesturing bearded prophet shown half length, wearing a turban fastened with a gold jewel and an orange capelet with green hood. On verso, ends of four lines of text in a large rotunda script. Marginal extensions of decoration trimmed away, gold and pigments rubbed. Matted and framed.
