This novel was published as Kindling and Ashes; or, The Heart of Barbara Wayne, New York, 1926. It is one of the prolific author's later works (he died in 1928) and the manuscript, with its very heavy revisions, is quite different from the lightly corrected works of his earlier period. McCutcheon began his career as a newspaper writer and editor. His first published novel, Graustark (1901), was a tremendous success, both as a book and in dramatized form, and many of his later works were also best sellers.

Provenance: George Barr McCutcheon (sale of his manuscripts, Parke-Bernet, 6 November 1944, lot 439) -- Francis Kettaneh, bookplate. (2)
