STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS. Underwoods. London: Chatto and Windus 1887. 12mo, original dark blue cloth, uncut, extremities rubbed, sides a little soiled, blue half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS MOTHER, inscribed in ink on the half-title by Stevenson: "To my mother from R.L.S." At the end of 49 of the book's 54 poems Stevenson has written in pencil the place of composition, e.g. "Hyères," Edinb.," "Bournemouth," "San Francisco," "Swanston," etc. (the book's other 5 poems have printed places of composition); with a typographical correction by the author on p. [45] and on p. 54; with a leaf spray stitched on final leaf; with the 32-page publisher's catalogue at end dated July 1887. Beinecke 445. "Requiem," one of Stevenson's best-known poems, was first printed in this volume; the book also contains two poems about motherhood: "It is not yours O mother, to complain" and "The Sick Child."
