BUNYAN, John (1628-1688), spurious work -- T[homas] S[HERMAN]. The Second Part of the Pilgrims Progress, from this present world of wickedness and misery, to an eternity of holiness and felicity. London: Thomas Malthus, 1683.

12° (144 x 76mm). Collation: A-H12 I6 *6 (quire *6 bound between A1 and A2). Engraved frontispiece (skilfully repaired). (Lacking engraved plate opposite p. 26, A5 with neatly repaired tear affecting text, occasional strengthening of outer and lower blank margins, a few head-lines just shaved, tiny hole neatly repaired on E4 affecting two characters.) 19th-century blue morocco gilt, gilt edges, by W. Pratt. Provenance: Cardiff Castle bookplate.

Second edition of this continuation of the Pilgrim's Progress, by 'T. S.', whose initials appear at the end of the author's apology. Sharrock suggests that he was Thomas Sherman, "a General Baptist who set out to improve both Bunyan's theology and his literary manners." At no stage does Sherman claim that the work is Bunyan's - no author's name appears on the title page - and Sherman appears merely to have wished "to counteract the alleged 'frivilous' character of First Part" (Harrison). In his apology, Sherman states that his work is intended as a "Supplyment, or a Second Part" to the original work. In the British Library copy, as in the present copy, quire * is bound between A1 and A2: in the Southey copy it was bound at the end of the volume. The spurious second part was first published in 1682 and continued to be published until 1736. Copies of the early editions are rarely found in good condition. The genuine second part of the Pilgrim's Progress was first published by Nathaniel Ponder in 1684. Wing S-179 (8 copies only); Harrison 32; Sharrock pp. cxii-iv.

[ANONYMOUS]. The Pilgrim's Progress from this world to that which is to come: the third part . . . to which is added the life and death of John Bunyan. London: E. Millet for J. Deacon, J. Back and J. Blare, 1693.

12° (137 x 76mm). Collation: A6 B-I12 K4. Woodcut frontispiece of "sleeping Bunyan". (Lacking H6, probably title to the Life of Bunyan, a few head-lines just trimmed in Pilgrim's Progress.) 19th-century blue morocco gilt, gilt edges, by Lortic Fils.

FIRST EDITION of this spurious work, which continued to be published as the third part of the Progress for over a century. The actual author of the work remains unidentified. Wing B-5583 (5 copies only); Harrison pp.75-6. (2)
