Lot Essay

The marble of Satyre et Bacchante, originally exhibited at the Salon of 1834, was received with some outrage by the critics and public. The work disappeared after 1954 and was known only through a photograph and reductions, such as the present bronze, until it was rediscovered and acquired by the Louvre in 1980.
