[CASE, John (d.1600)?]. The Praise of Mvsicke: wherein besides the antiquitie, dignitie, delectation & vse thereof in civil matters, is also declared the sober and lawfull vse of the same in the ... Church of God. Oxford: John Barnes, 1586.
Small 8° (139 x 90mm). Collation: *4 A-I8 K4. (Title fingersoiled; minor waterstaining in quires H and I.) 19th-century straight-grained morocco gilt by Hayes of Oxford (rubbed). Provenance: Dr.Richard Farmer, with his signature and 'Cat. 1772: 0.7.6' on title (sale 1798); John Brand, with signature on title, dated 1798 and bookplate (sale 1807-8); Thomas Caldecott (lot 1382, his sale in 1833); Rev.Philip Bliss, bought for 19s, he then paid 11s for the binding (note on endpaper and his sign on B1, his sale in 1858). An earlier owner has identified the supposed author on the title and made marginal annotations in ink; Cardiff Castle bookplate.
ONLY EDITION. The attribution to Case is doubtful. He was a physician and philosopher at Oxford, but also a chorister and the author of a work, Apologia Musices, in 1588. The question of authorship is discussed at length by F. Madan Oxford Books vol.I. pp.279-80, who declares the author to have been 'an enthusiastic musician' but unlikely to have been John Case, even though Thomas Watson wrote a sonnet to him apparently alluding to the present volume. STC 20184 (lists 10 copies, including the present); Madan, op.cit. I.p.20.
