Lot Essay

James Newton is first recorded working at the Wardour Street address in 1781. Formerly in partnership with Lawrence Fell of Fell & Turton, Newton continued his business under various names until 1821, supplying to Burghley House among others. A pair of armchairs based on a Thomas Hope design in Household Furniture, 1807, pl. 22, is currently on exhibit at Brighton Pavilion (G. Beard & C. Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1986, p.644).
