Lot Essay

Such whimsical claret jugs are inspired by Tenniel's illustrations to Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. An example representing the Carpenter, probaly ensuite with the Walrus is illustrated in Michael Clayton, Christie's Pictorial Hÿistory of English and American Silver, 1985, p. 288, fig. 10.
