In the rococo style, the gadrooned rims with scrolls at intervals and applied with vine form handles, the borders chased with foliage, scrolls and rocaille on a matted ground, enclosing, on one side, an engraved coat-of-arms, marked on reverses--14¼in.(36.3cm.) long (114oz., 3548gr.) (4)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Alston with those of Milles on an escutcheon of pretence, as borne by Rowland Austin of Pishobury, Hertfordshire, born in 1782, the 2nd son of Thomas Alston of Odell. He served in the 3rd Guards in the Expedition to Copenhagen in 1807 and married, on May 26, 1810, Rose, eldest daughter and heir of Jeremiah Milles. He sat as M.P. for Hertfordshire 1835-1841.
