Each on square base, chased with a band of stiff leaves below a calyx of applied acanthus, rising to a cylindrical columnar stem with part-fluting and Corinthian capitals, with shaped square removable nozzles, each engraved on base with a crest, marked on bases and nozzles--13in.(33cm.) high (4)

Lot Essay

The crest is that of Phipps, probably for Constantine Phipps of Mulgrave Castle, Yorkshire, born in 1722. He married in 1742 Lepell, daughter of John, Lord Hervey and in 1767 he was created Baron Mulgrave. He died in 1775.
