Lot Essay

Three of these enamels are illustrated in the catalogue of the Botkin Collection published in Saint Petersburg in 1910 on plates 60,65, and 75. While all are described as Byzantine enamels of the X-XII centuries, recent unpublished research suggests that they are later copies with a possible connection to Fabergé's workshops. For an example of Byzantine style enamels, see ********.
