THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED LATIN BIBLE. The fine woodcut illustrations in this edition belong properly to the accompanying Postilla of Nicolaus of Lyra, a text with an illustrated tradition in manuscript. This tradition did not immediately translate into print, since the printers of many early editions provided only blank spaces for the illustrations (see lot 251). Koberger was the first to print illustrations for the Postilla as a separate edition in 1481, and the woodcuts in the present edition are copies of those. In turn, they strongly influenced the woodcuts in the first illustrated Bible in Italy (see lot 254). The Franciscans at Villingen owned another copy, or partial copy of this Koberger Bible, since a volume 4 with their ownership made up a mixed set in the Donaueschingen library. RARE ON THE MARKET, with no copy appearing at auction within the past 20 years. HC *3166; GW 4288; BMC II, 427 (IB. 7323); Goff B-613; Pellechet 2345; IDL 842; BSB B-453; Schreiber 3472; Schramm XVII, p.8 (4)
