Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, the seventeenth-century gem merchant brought many of great historic diamonds to France where Louis XIV was an enthusiastic and able client. It is from this point that the history of the few truly blue diamonds really begins.

In ancient times, the blue diamond of India came from the Kollur Mine in Golconda, and it was from this source that the first blue stones found their way to the Royal Courts of Europe. Almost all of the blue diamonds found today come from the Premier Mine in South Africa.

Of all the natural colors in which diamonds can be found, blue is one of the rarest and most desirable. Natural blue diamonds derive their beautiful hues from minute impurity atoms of boron, incorporated within the crystal lattice of the diamond during its crystallization. They are members of the rare Type IIb category and are semi-conductors of electricity.

The 5.38cts. oval marquise-cut diamond being offered today is certified as fancy blue, VVS1 and accompanied by a working diagram stating that the stone may be potentially flawless, making it extremely rare and desirable.
