Lot Essay

This drawing and the sketches in the following three lots were drawn on pages taken from a copy of Oeuvres dramatiques de Shakespeare edited by Horace Meyer and published by Imprimerie d'Amedie Saintin, Paris, 1835. The subjects are related to the circus theme which preoccupied Picasso during 1905, and culminated in the great Family of Saltimbanques (Zervos, vol. 1, no. 285; coll. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Chester Dale Collection).

A photo-certificate from Maya Widmaier-Picasso dated Paris, February 10, 1992 accompanies this drawing.
