Inscribed : "On a rainy day in early autumn of bingchen year (1676), Mr. Xiweng asked me to do a painting for him. I painted this hoping to make him laugh."

Fa Ruozhen was born in Shandong province and attained the jinshi degree in 1646. He later served as governor of Anwei and was known for his refined character. His calligraphy training began with the study of the writing styles of the Wei and Jin dynasties. Fa Ruozhen was also a talented amateur painter of landscapes.
