Folio, 293 x 199 mm. (11 9/16 x 7 7/8 in.), contemporary limp vellum, title lettered along spine, lacking ties, slightly stained, modern chemise and morocco-backed slipcase, fols. 6 and Aa3 each with a short marginal tear entering text block, marginal worming to title and index leaves, manuscript deletions to V5r and Ii5v obscuring 3 words, occasional minor foxing, a few leaves darkened.
FIRST EDITION, half-title, type-ornament title border, woodcut initials and large tail-piece ornaments, with the "Compendio Historial" (often lacking), bound at end preceding index.
Borba de Moraes, pp. 743-4; Brunet IV, 1349; Palau 273201; Sabin 72524.
An important work on the early exploration of the Amazon basin. "One of the reasons for the rarity of this work is the fact that it was published without the licence of the Congregation of the "Propaganda Fide", contrary to the orders of Clement X for works of this kind. It was consequently included among the forbidden works in the "Index", despite its bearing all the other ecclesiastical and civil licences" (Borba de Moraes). Christoval de Acuñas's rare Descubrimiento del gran rio de las Amazonas (Madrid 1641) is reprinted in a somewhat abridged form on pp. 100-141.
Provenance: Don Joseph Araño(?) Dominguez, early signature on title -- Anonymous owner (sale, Sotheby's London, 24 April 1987, lot 316).
