A similar gauze pu fu can be seen in a black and white photograph reproduced by Verity Wilson in Chinese Dress, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1986, p. 13, no. 3. The robe is worn by Edward Brennan, a Deputy Commissioner in the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs, who although a Westerner, 'was granted the right to wear the insignia of the First Class of the Third Division of the Imperial Chinese Order of the Double Dragon on 18 December 1908'.
