Lot Essay

Nakoma is a figure of an Native American woman holding and protecting her children. Wright also designed an accompanying warrior. Both figures were derived from larger versions which the artist planned to use in the Nakoma Memorial Gateway, Madison, Wisconsin. The commission was never realized. Large posthumous editions of the figures were cast in bronze circa 1970.
