Partly printed document signed ("Th Jefferson") as President and ("James Madison") as Secretary of State, executed by David Gelston, Collector of the Port of New York, 18 November 1805. 1 page, folio, 380 x 262 mm. (15 x 10 3/8 in.), ON FINE PARCHMENT, large papered seal, usual scalloped top edge, matted with two engraved portraits, glazed and attractively framed. An engraved document with a large vignette of a fully-rigged sailing ship at top and beneath, a harbor scene of boats, lighthouse and church steeples (signed in the plate by the engraver, E. Savage), accomplished in manuscript. SHIP'S PASSPORT for the Schooner Lion of New York, with a crew of 8, which vessel should be allowed passage "without any hindrance, seizure or molestation." Fine.
