Partly printed document signed ("Z.Taylor") as President, countersigned by Secretary of the Interior Thomas Ewing, Washington, D.C., 8 May 1849. 1 page, oblong folio, 296 x 453 mm. (11 3/4 x 17 13 16 in.), two small holes at fold intersections, otherwise in very fine condition, attractively printed on heavy stock within a decorative typographical border, accomplished in manuscript, embossed seal at lower left. President Taylor appoints William Paine, of Maine, a Marshal of the United States for the District of Maine "during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being, and until the end of the next session of the Senate..." Appointments signed by Taylor during his brief term as President are scarce.
