A SILVER LOVING CUP
MAKER'S MARK OF TIFFANY & CO., NEW YORK, 1880-1884

Baluster form, applied with a scroll and flowerhead mid-band, the three scroll handles issuing from foliate calices, with molded rim, engraved under base Caroline Astor from Sara Belmont 1884, marked--6 7/8in. high
(30 oz. 10 dwt.)
Provenance
The inscription on the base records that this cup was a gift to Caroline Webster Schermerhorn Astor (Mrs. William B. Astor, Jr.) from Sara Belmont, wife of August Belmont (1813-1890), financier of New York. Both the Astors and Belmonts were important patrons of Tiffany's, and Caroline Astor was the leading socialite in New York in the late 19th century, and formed the Four Hundred, New York's most elite social roster.
