This elegantly proportioned armchair is embellished with the unusual addition of gouge marks on the ears of the crestrail. A nearly identical comb-back Windsor armchair with the same motif is illustrated in Charles Santore, The Windsor Style in America, vol. 2, (Philadelphia, 1987). Other than these two examples, only fan-back Windsor side-chairs are known to exhibit the same decorative punchwork.
