Rectangular, the base, sides and hinged cover with alternating bands of engine-turning and reeding, with scroll thumbpiece, the cover with engraved with a crest within a rectangular plaque, the interior cover engraved Fanning C. Tucker, marked--3 1/4in. long

Lot Essay

The crest is that of Tucker.

A similar box by the same maker is illustrated in Philip Hammerslough, American Silver, vol. II, 1960, p. 97 and in Henry and Sydney Berry-Hill, Antique Gold Boxes, New York, 1953, p. 118, and was exhibited in American Gold 1700-1860, Yale University Art Gallery, 1963, no. 19.
