Lot Essay

At the Battle of Eureka Stockade elements of the 40th and 12th Regiments together with the Victoria Police were used to quell the miner's rebellion. Both Regiments were armed with the Pattern 1842 musket and this example is marked on the butt plate for the 40th Regiment, H Company, (40/H/14).
When both Regiments departed for the Maori Land Wars they were rearmed with the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle, and the 1842 Patterns were stored in Melbourne.
A similar musket was offered by Christie's Australia, Prints, Books and Manuscripts, 17 August 1997, Lot 830. It was marked on the butt plate 40/H/67.
