The fine surface hammering and design appear to be the work of the early mainline Goto school, probably by Goto Yujo (the 1st mainline master 1440-1512) or Goto Sojo (the 2nd mainline master, 1461-1538)
A similar shakudo pair was sold in the Collection of Dr. W.A. Compton, Christie's New York, 31 March, 92, lot 129 which was attributed to Goto Sojo by Dr. Homma.
The subject of long-armed monkeys became popular during the late Muromachi period, often portrayed in Muromachi suiboku paintings in the Chinese manner. They were extensively used by the early Goto and Mino masters.
