Lot Essay

Georgers Verger was one of the most famous clock designers of the 1920's. At a time when decorative clocks became more inventive in style than ever before, Verger was one of the most prolific men during this period. He worked with nearly all the great jewellers of the day, in Europe, Van Cleef & Arpels, Janesich, Lacloche and Boucheron and in the United States, Tiffany, Black Starr and Frost, and J.E. Caldwell.

He acquired great acclaim in his time perhaps even more so with his contemporary critics as Cartier kept their chief designer Charles Jacqueau annonymous. Nevertheless, Verger's inspired designs had no bounds and perhaps the pinnacle of clock making at this time was the famous mystery clock which Verger produced as well as Cartier.

J.E. Caldwell is one of the great American Jewellers outside New York. Established in Philadelphia in the 1830's, the firm prospered in one of Americas whealthiest cities. Emulating New York styles they became well known for their colourful design using hardstones as well as semi-precious and precious gems.

This clock epitomizes the sense of adventure and luxury of th Art Deco period with the pedigree of two great names either side of the Atlantic.
