E. G. Benson, Fern House, Silver Hill, Hastings; Christie's, 20 July 1872, lot 104. Said to have been in the collection of Count Burnay (dispersed in 1934), and subsequently in the collection of the Marquis de Valflor.

Lot Essay

On the stretcher is glued an old French catalogue description calling the present picture 'Le Dressoir' and giving the lot number 89; E. Bénézit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, etc., VI, 1956, records a painting with this title in an anonymous sale, 15-18 April 1901 (sold for 4,600Ff.).
