A REGENCY HARDSTONE AND SILVER SNUFF-BOX
Birmingham 1821/1822, maker's mark partly rubbed
Rectangular box with canted corners, the cover set with a semi-translucent yellow hardstone mounted à jour, the base engraved "Presented by Cuthbert Ellison to the Revd. John Hodgson, Historian of Northumberland 1810. Subsequently given to his Grandson Lord Northbourne by the Historian's Grandson J. G. Hodgson. 1915." -- 7.3 cm wide, together with an English Regency silver and hardstone snuff-box, Birmingham 1808/1809, master T & Co., rectangular box with rounded corners, the lid set with a red hardstone cameo representing a gentleman in profile to the left, probably William Pitt the Younger, surrounded by ovoids containing marcasites, the interior gilt -- 7.9 cm wide; together with a Danish silver snuff-box, probably Odense, mid-19th Century, oval box, the sides chased with acanthus on a matted ground, the cover decorated with an oval reserve depicting a trophy of love surrounded by a sunburst motif bordered by trailing leaves, the interior with traces of gilding -- 6.7 cm wide (3)
