César (César Baldaccini) was born in Marseilles in 1921. He began making iron sculpture in 1947 and had his first one man show at the Gelerie Lucien Durand, Paris, in 1954. During the 1960's he became internationally known chiefly for his sculpture made by crushing automobile chassis with a hydraulic press, calling them "compressions dirigées". He also applied this technique in the creation of pieces of jewellery, as represented by this pendant.
