signed on the flange "J. F. Bautte. & Cie a Geneve", circa 1830

Two boxes of square section with cut corners, all sides decorated with arabesques of multicoloured opaque and translucent cloisonné enamel, on a matted ground; one with three hinged secret compartments opening on both ends and as a double cover -- 90 mm wide. (2)

Lot Essay

Jean-François Bautte (1772-1837) had several associates since the foundation of his studio in 1793, and the present form of the signature on the flange corresponds to the period when his workshop was associated for the first time with Rossel, from 19 September 1826 to 18 August 1855.
