GERMAN SCHOOL, circa 1780/1790

Duchess Philippine-Charlotte of Brunswick, her powdered hair adorned with a white lace cap tied with a black lace scarf, wearing a white fichu over a blue dress; oval -- 50 mm high, silver frame set with rose-cut diamonds.

Lot Essay

Philippine-Charlotte (1716-1801), wife of Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1713-1780), was the 5th child of King Frederick William I of Prussia (the famous Soldatenkönig) and his wife Sophie-Dorothea of Hannover. The present miniature shows the striking family resemblance with her brother, King Frederick the Great of Prussia.
