Purpurine is heavy, deep red vitreous compound produced by crystallizing lead chromate in a glass matrix. It was known to have been use in the 17th century but was rediscovered in the 19th century in Russia by Petouchov, a worker at the Imperial Glass Factory.
Fabergé made extensive use of this material, particularly in miniature animal carvings.
