THE PROPERTY OF THE CHICHESTER CARMELITE CONVENT A Carmelite Community was founded in 1678 at Hoogstaet in Brabaut by Maria Gabriella de la Laing, Lady Rheingrave, Countess of Hoogstraet. It subsequently moved to England in 1794, to France in 1831, and to its present Chichester location in 1870. The following pieces, some of which have been given by the Founderess, have been with the community continously, almost since its foundation over 300 years ago.

On lobed oval base chased with acanthus frieze, grapes, wheat sheaves and the heads of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, the baluster-shaped stem chased with swirling flutes rising to the circular glass-walled receptacle surmounted by coloured glass-studded flowers and a rayed sun supporting cherubs holding the instruments of the Passion, the figure of a pelican feeding its progeniture, the Holy Dove, a bust of God the Father, scattered with vine and sheaves of wheat, and surmounted by a crown with cross, marked on base - 79 cm (31 in) high
