Heart-shaped, the vertical sides applied with an open-work frieze of scrolls, flowers, foliage and animal masks, the flat cover similarly decorated with applied open-work plaque of scrolls, flowers, foliage, baskets of flowers, female grotesque masks and with waved rims, marked under base - 9 cm (3½ in) wide, 3 cm (1¼ in) high

Lot Essay

A number of similarly decorated boxes by Joachim Albert Fincke survive. Some are in the collections of the Hamburg Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, the Hannover Kestner-Museum and the Ermitage, St. Petersburg.
