A HUNGARIAN PARCEL-GILT BEAKER
Brassó (Kronstadt) circa 1739, maker's mark of Michaël II May

Shaped-octagonal and with detachable spreading foot, with slightly tapering fluted bowl each chased and engraved with panels of scrolls, foliage, rosettes, diaperwork, scalework, fruit and flowers on matted ground and with the monogram "CS" and dated 1739, marked on base - 17 cm (6¾ in) high

Lot Essay

A very similiar beaker, also by Michaël II May and dated 1729, is in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg. It is illustrated in Deutsche Goldschmiedekunst vom 15. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert aus dem Germanischen Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg and Berlin 1987, Nr. 72. Michaël II May was the son of Andreas May, a Brassó goldsmith. He completed his apprenticeship in 1718, then spent several years in France and other countries before entering the Brassó guild. He died in 1776.
