Michel Ney, son of a Cooper, joined the army in 1787, took part in all major Napoleonic campaigns, was made Maréchal d'Empire in 1804, Duc d'Elchingen in 1808 and Prince de la Moskova in 1813. Having changed sides twice at the return of the Bourbons, he was to be executed in 1815.
