A RUSSIAN GOLD-MOUNTED AVENTURINE SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE

Oval box, the cover centered by an oval portrait miniature depicting Grand-Duke Michael Pavlovich in uniform with red facings and gold épaulettes, decorated with the Imperial Russian Order of Saint-Andrew the First Called, within a rose-cut diamond border on an oval gold mount chased and engraved in four-colour gold with garlands and flowers, the narrow gold mounts of the box engraved with stylised acanthus -- 76 mm wide, minor hairline cracking, within the original fitted silk-lined red morocco case with gilt-stamped border.

Lot Essay

Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich (1798-1849), tenth child of Tsar Paul I of Russia and his wife Maria Feodorovna, was married in 1824 to Charlotte of Württemberg.
