The hinged cover depicting the map of the City of Tobolsk on gilt stippled ground within a rococo scroll border, the sides with a map of Tiumen, Tara Arkarka, Turinsk and Tomsk, the base with a map of Ieniseisk -- 10 cm long

Lot Essay

While the main centre for silver production in Siberia was Velikii Ustiug in the mid-18th Century, the capital, Tobolsk, produced niello objects of extraordinary quality, almost all of them under the order of Denis Ivanovich Chicherin (1720-1785), Governor of Siberia (1763-1781).
