Jean-Baptiste Pierre Lebrun was a genre painter who became one of the foremost picture dealers in Paris at the end of the 18th century. All the paintings reproduced in the three volumes of the Galerie des Peintres were Lebrun's collection or stock, and the publication of the work was probably intended as a celebration of his expertise and career.
