FIRST EDITION of the first two parts of the work more commonly known in its 1789 publication with text by Restif de la Bretonne. The present copy has the very rare first title carrying the imprint of Barbou and dated 1774, which had been suppressed. The plates and accompanying text depict first a day in the life of a fashionable young lady in French society under Louis XVI, and then, continued by Moreau, her pregnancy and eventual re-entry into society. Ray considered the second part with engravings after Moreau as "among the great achievements of the world's graphic arts." Cohen-de Ricci 351-62; Ray French (1789 edition) 55.
