4to, 250 x 192mm. (9 7/8 x 7 9/16in.), contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, upper joint cracked, spine ends chipped, corners worn, a few trifling fold tears, very occasional browning.

FIRST EDITION, 20 folding engraved maps and charts, 3 engraved plates, woodcut vignette on title, head- and tailpiece ornaments and initials, half-title.

"Bougainville, once an aide-de-camp to the Marquis de Montcalm in Canada, made an unsuccessful attempt to colonize the Falkland Islands. Later [in 1767], on orders from his government, Bougainville handed over the Falklands to Spain. [Spain yielded them to England, by convention, in 1771]"--Hill, p. 31; Sabin 6864.
