Folio, 335 x 218mm. (13 1/8 x 8 1/2in.), contemporary calf, worn, backstrip defective, upper cover and first gathering detached, some trifling wormholes at upper inner blank margins, some faint spotting.
Second edition in Latin, edited by Jacques Guillemeau, title-page printed in red and black with large medallion printer's device, a similar device at end, woodcut portrait of the author and over 300 text woodcuts of anatomy, surgery, artificial limbs, freaks of nature, animals and other subjects.

Paré is justly hailed as the outstanding military surgeon of the sixteenth century. He knew no Latin and his works were first published in French; the first collected edition of his works was published in Paris in 1579. His pupil Guillemeau edited the first Latin edition, published in Paris in 1582.
