PREFACE: Aldus is aware that Gaza and Apollonius may seem hard going at first, but he encourages the reader to re-read them and these grammatical tracts will become easy and agreeable. Pay attention to Theodore's diction and you will find in him pure, sweet Attic eloquence. Apollonius and Herodian are equally sure guides. As Isocrates says: Who would love learning must be widely learned. [The word παυη in this preface was supplied in manuscript at the Aldine shop.]
